An alternator is an electrical generator that converts mechanical energy into alternating current (AC) electrical energy. In most vehicle and marine applications, it’s responsible for charging the battery and powering the electrical systems when the engine is running. It essentially acts as a generator, converting the engine’s mechanical energy into the electricity needed to keep the car running and its components powered. The alternator typically includes a rotor (spinning magnets), a stator (copper coils), a voltage regulator, and a rectifier.
